In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about following this lovable family navigate their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
