Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer who crafted many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the pastel suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
The fashion world mourns the loss to a authentic original whose legacy on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
