Greenlandic Women Secure Judicial Triumph in Battle against the Danish State over Forced Contraceptive Coil Affair.

Survivors of a historical campaign where thousands of Greenlandic females, some minors were covertly implanted using intrauterine devices (IUDs) absent informed permission are declaring a win following their court battle with the Danish government.

Officials have confirmed that they are now eligible for compensation from a reconciliation fund.

Government Agreement Finalized

Folketinget, and state authorities, finalized a deal granting an estimated four thousand five hundred affected individuals the right to seek 300,000 DKK (£35,000) per person.

The announcement comes after a lengthy campaign led by 143 claimants who filed a lawsuit demanding compensation for the trauma and distress they experienced, arguing it constituted a breach of fundamental personal rights.

Historical Context

The Danish state administered the territory as a colony until 1953 and retained authority over its healthcare system into the late 20th century.

In September, following a long period of failing to address the violations, Denmark made an official apology. The country's leader expressed sorrow for the “systemic discrimination” against women and girls within the Danish healthcare system.

“These actions caused major impacts on the Greenlandic women who suffered not only physical but also psychological harm,” stated the government minister.

Redress Process Details

Authorities clarified that women who were given the procedure without their knowledge or consent during a thirty-one year period would be able to apply for compensation starting next year. Relevant legislation is set to be enacted by mid-year.

Based on the findings of an impartial investigation of medical procedures during that time, roughly four and a half thousand women are potentially entitled to compensation.

For eligibility, applicants must:

• Provide a “credible report” detailing what happened.
• Demonstrate they resided on the island during the qualifying period.
• Declare on oath that they possessed no awareness nor gave permission for it to occur.

Voices of Survivors

A plaintiffs, who was 14 when she was instructed to report to the hospital for no clear reason, described the experience as feeling an assault.

“Our activism publicly to the media proved effective,” she said. “We started in 2022 resulting in within three years we got an apology and compensation.”

A different voice shared satisfaction, saying, “We are happy. Like my mother said: we won.” Although there is a view the amount should have been greater, they expressed contentment regarding the recognition of what happened.

Official Reactions

A Greenlandic official described the settlement as “well past due”. Stating clearly, “This isn't primarily financial. It is about recognition of the injury and the very severe consequences.”

A Danish cabinet member conceded the scandal was a “dark chapter in our joint past”, adding while redress “will not erase the suffering from the women” but it “serves to recognize and express regret over the experiences.”
