A minimum of 16 lives were killed and more than 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have labeled a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to medical facilities.
Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the individuals who have been named to date.
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the moments before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.
A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
From the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
