Personalities from both sides of the partisan aisle and the Hollywood industry are coming together to censure Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the shocking passing of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Brentwood home, Trump took to his platform to label the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". In a message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the anger he provoked others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Police have since confirmed the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the incident. It is reported his bond was set at a significant sum.
The response to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.
“What a appalling and vile comment,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also condemned the remarks. She pointed to previous comments from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Have you no decency? Can you get any worse?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "This is a sick man."
Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Some GOP elected officials also expressed disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". Greene also alluded to struggles with substance abuse and psychological well-being within families.
Another Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged others in his political party to justify the statements.
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.
"There is autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democracy collapse around the world."
Regardless of his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and condemned political violence without reservation after the shooting of a different political figure.
Providing a element of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
