Senegal's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: From Dreams to Tournament Favorites.

As I enter the space, Lamine Camara picks up a football he clings to throughout the conversation. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and raw talent won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult approval to secure was not a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his path in the sport. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

However, the famed academy – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the academy. They prevented me from going back home,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough

This move set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to victory and earning player of the tournament.

Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his family support to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to control his competitive fire, having been shown red early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Ambitions

With his current club, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Currently, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. He is frequently ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the main top prize in the future.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it instills confidence.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
