The King's Legendary Point-Scoring Streak Ends, However Los Angeles Pull Off Victory Over Toronto.

LeBron James was aware his monumental run of reaching double digits was threatened. When it mattered most, however, it was not his focus.

The smart move meant distributing the basketball – and he executed. With that selfless act, the unprecedented record finished.

James's staggering run of 1,297 consecutive NBA regular season double-digit scoring performances was snapped on Thursday night, when the league's career points king finished with eight total points during the Los Angeles Lakers' 123-120 victory over Toronto. He provided the game-winning assist, feeding Rui Hachimura to hit a triple at the buzzer.

“None,” James replied when asked about the streak ending. “We won.”

An Unselfish Choice Seals the Game

James could have sought to clinch the game – and extended his record – with the last shot, yet he opted to pass to Rui stationed in the corner. Hachimura made the shot, with LeBron celebrated triumphantly.

You have to play basketball the right way. Always make the correct play,” James explained. “That’s just been my philosophy. That’s how I learned to play. I’ve done that for two decades.”

James is fully cognizant of how many points he has during a game,” said Lakers coach JJ Redick. He made the play like he’s done countless times.”

The Run's Closing Chapter

James re-entered the game for the final time with 5:23 remaining, the outcome and his personal record both hanging in the balance. He had a mere six points on 3-of-15 shooting then.

He scored with under two minutes remaining to knot the score and missed a shot at one minute to go that would have taken him to ten points.

He passed up another shot – but could have. A teammate found him with a few seconds left, however, James decided to make the pass instead of shooting.

The spirits of the game, if you do it the proper way, they will repay you,” Redick stated.

Reflecting on a Staggering Run

This incredible run commenced on Jan. 6, 2007. It was, by far the most extended streak of its kind in NBA history: MJ had 866 consecutive games with 10+ points, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had 787 such games, and Karl Malone had the fourth-longest run of 575 games.

He is such a team-oriented player,” said teammate a fellow Laker.

“He’s just playing the sport. He could have shot but because of his nature as a player and his character off the court, he chose the pass, found Rui and claimed the victory.”

Scoring in double figures had typically been an afterthought early in the fourth quarter began. During James’s streak, he had achieved ten points by the start of the fourth over twelve hundred times prior to Thursday.

But two of those unusual single-digit games through three quarters took place just days before: He had nine going into the fourth against Dallas on 28 November, followed by six before the fourth quarter versus the Suns on Monday night.

LeBron was able to preserve the record in the Phoenix game. The very next outing, it finished – but he still rejoiced anyway.

My focus is to make the correct play. That is instinctive, win, lose or draw,” James declared. If you make the unselfish play, the sports deities forever giving back to me.”
