The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a major signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Bayern was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major uplift to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further business:
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
