This Limited-Edition Pikachu Promo Aims to Be Super Effective On Resellers

To celebrate the arrival of a captivating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, an exciting collaboration is underway. Pokémon's creators alongside the Natural History Museum are opening a temporary store stocked with special merchandise. Enthusiasts will find offerings including stationery, plushes, and artwork all inspired by the museum's aesthetic. The big draw, though, is a specially made Pikachu card, offered as a free bonus at the pop-up. The store is scheduled from the physical location to its web counterpart between late January and mid-April.

The Book That Inspires the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology represents a highly anticipated tome packed with beautiful illustrations depicting Pokémon in their wild environments. The concept is what a Pokémon Professor might publish after trainers submit their data, or a naturalist's journal could have sketched if the famous islands teemed with flying-types rather than finches. A key appeal stems from the book's serious treatment, presenting Pokémon as worthy of scientific inquiry. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara together with artist Chihiro Kinoshita both hold PhDs in ecology and behavioral science.

Why This Special Card Stand Out

The company regularly to issue special edition promos celebrating major tournaments or crossover partnerships. Many such promotional cards often feature the iconic mouse Pokémon who serves as the series face. What distinguishes this new museum card however, is the unusually large dimensions. While exact measurements have not been publicly disclosed, its distribution will certainly be highly restricted, with customers able to get only a single card per purchase.

Limiting Speculator Activity

According to an official announcement, some of the merchandise may also be available outside the museum walls. But, a wider release is slated for select retailers in the UK. Importantly, collectors will not be able to acquire the card through the official web shop. Although speculator demand is a given, the setup suggests they will have trouble hoarding mass quantities on this occasion. If you're feeling left out, there is an alternative like fossil-themed display headed to the Windy City in the coming months.

"Every penny from purchases from the Museum shop and its web shop, including these items, support the Natural History Museum’s non-profit work. This includes the efforts of hundreds of researchers dedicated to conducting studies to discover solutions to the planetary emergency," the statement notes.
