Three-time National Basketball Association MVP Nikola Jokic endured a "heartbreaking" knee injury while the Denver Nuggets fell by a score of 147-123 to the Miami Heat.
The Serbian center was hurt towards the end of the second quarter during an accidental collision with team-mate Spencer Jones.
His teammate came down on the foot of the big man, who instantly collapsed to the floor clutching his leg.
The star, that leads the NBA season in rebounds and dimes, recorded 21 points and eight assists in the contest before incurring the injury.
Jokic will have an MRI scan on Tuesday to assess the extent of the problem.
"Right away, Jokic realized he was hurt," said Denver coach Adelman.
"This happens in professional sports. Anyone that is injured, that's gut-wrenching, particularly a player as important as him. We will know more on Tuesday."
"The team will adjust as a team. Obviously, right now, I am focused just about Jokic as a person and the frustration of facing something like that."
