Two Victims Identified in Brown University Attack as Authorities Persist in Manhunt for Gunman.

The pair of scholars who lost their lives in the weekend's mass shooting on the university campus were honored at the start of the week – as a manhunt for their shooter persisted following the freeing by local law enforcement of the only individual questioned in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was described as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, according to the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a gathering on Sunday.

Cook was the vice-presidency of Brown’s branch of the campus GOP group, according to the organization. Karoline Leavitt also posted sympathies on social media, stating: “Words cannot express. Thinking of her kin and peers, above all her mom and dad.”

An International Student

The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, an Uzbek national in his freshman year at the prestigious university, according to relatives.

Umurzokov’s identity was verified by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He had big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a tribute.

The Shooting Incident

Nine more persons were injured in the weekend shooting in the engineering department of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the university's examination week.

Law enforcement reported on Sunday evening that a man aged 24 detained in a raid at a Hampton Inn about 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was being released.

“We have a murderer out there,” declared the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you need to change course and head another way, and that is the current situation over the last 24 hours or so.”

Ongoing Concerns

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “We know that this is likely to cause new worry for our public”.

The gunman opened fire inside a classroom in the building on Saturday, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a handgun, a law enforcement official reported to the Associated Press.

Law enforcement that entered the lodging recovered two handguns and magazines when the person of interest was arrested, as was reported.

Those Hurt

Among those wounded, a single scholar was discharged from care, mentioned Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in serious yet stable state, and one was in critical condition, officials reported on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a private K-12 school in North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

Further Tributes

Cook was honored at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only here growing up... but at the university she was a radiant presence in that specific location as well.”

The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the organization. “Ella was recognized for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and fellow classmates,” he said.

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the student's death in a tribute. “Our profound condolences go out to Mr Umurzokov’s family, loved ones, and peers and grieve for of his bright future.”

The weekend's murders at Brown, the nation’s seventh-oldest higher education institution with about over seven thousand undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in this year, according to records.
