US Military Executes Lethal Attack in Pacific, Leading to 4 Fatalities

According to a senior defense spokesperson, the US armed forces executed a lethal strike on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, killing four individuals.

“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a craft operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Surveillance verified the vessel was transiting along a established narco-trafficking route and was involved in illicit drug transport. A total of four male drug traffickers were killed, and no US military forces were injured.”

Background and Prior Strikes

This announcement follows a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, pledging to increase the military buildup.

Just on the previous day, US defense officials said it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 strikes have killed at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.

Government Defends Tactics Amidst Pressure

The administration has faced increasing pressure to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has defended its campaign as a successful operation, saying it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of legal military action.

While the administration has said the operation is about halting drugs headed to the US, remarks from a top official appeared to confirm a broader geopolitical objective. In a recent interview, the senior advisor remarked the leader “wants to keep on blowing boats up until Venezuela's president cries uncle.”

This indicates the military campaign may be part of a strategy to remove Venezuela's sitting government.
